Compilations of memories and life histories by attending and distant volunteers

Elizabeth (Betsy) Harris Pope

How poignant to re-read my over-bright post from 2010. So much has changed since then, for the good and for the very, very bad. Both our daughters married and each produced two children, so the broodmy New Yorkers Anna, 8 and Marcus 6 and my Portland boys Theo, 6.5 and Ike, 4.

They are a huge consolation to me because their grandpa, my beloved Larry, was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer in June 2020 and died as he wished, with dignity on October 31, 2020. I'm so grateful for our 44 years of excellent adventures, but I still can't believe he's gone.

So I've set about writing my next chapter. I do a fair amount of baby-sitting, some volunteer gardening and once COVID eases up I hope to start tutoring New Mainers again, the folks who've come from Angola, Congo, and other trouble spots.

My biggest change was selling our 1904 Shingle Style cottage in April and moving into a light-filled new condo that faces the woods. I forest bathe morning til night. I just love the peace and tranquilty not to mention some smart, clever and kind new neighbors. I don't have the big wrap-around porch anymore, but my balcony seats three comfortably. So the invitation still stands to come visit me in Portland, a city I love more as the years go by.
