Compilations of memories and life histories by attending and distant volunteers

Brian Larson

Brian is a life-long sheepman and cattleman. He grew up raising sheep and beef cattle in SE Minnesota. He attended the University of Minnesota where he received a BS degree in Animal Science. He served one year in the Peace Corps in Morocco near Fkih bin Salah until an unfortunate accident (severed lateral collateral ligament, left leg) cut short his stay. After two surgeries (hammer & chisel days) and a nine-month recuperation, he joined his father to operate the family farm near Mabel Minnesota. Locally, Brian served as a school board member, county commissioner in Fillmore County Minnesota and a board member of several livestock breed associations.

Later, Brian obtained a MS degree from the University of Minnesota in Animal Science and concurrently served as extension beef nutritionist at the University of Minnesota. He obtained a PhD in nutrition from the University of Missouri in 1993. His doctoral research centered on the effects of nutrition on dopaminergic and adrenergic receptors in the nervous system. Subsequently, he was an assistant professor of ruminant nutrition at the University of Kentucky, nutrition scientist at the Nestle Research Center (St. Louis MO/Lausanne, Switz.), and senior nutritionist at the Kellogg Company.

Brian is currently Vice President of JG Consulting Services, where he and his wife specialize in promoting sustainability from ‘field to fork’ for global agricultural clients. He has been raising purebred and commercial sheep for 60 years. Brian has also been involved in preserving heritage livestock and poultry breeds for three decades. He was a director of the Michigan Sheep Breeders’ Association and is currently chair of the Livestock Conservancy board of directors.

He is married to Jennifer Garrett and they have a son, Bjorn, daughter-in-law, Lauren and two grand sons, Liam and Oliver. They all live in the Blue Ridge Mountains near Marshall, Madison County, North Carolina.

Incidentally, Brian kept a diary during his Peace Corps service which is available upon request.
